Not medical advice
Everything on Red Light Home Guide is general information. It is not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for a diagnosis or treatment from a qualified health professional. We are not doctors. Nothing here is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Red light therapy research is still developing. Where we say a device may help, we mean that some studies or users report a benefit, not that it will work for you. Results vary from person to person, and some people notice no change at all. Brand claims are the brand's own; we haven't verified them unless we say so.
Talk to your doctor first
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you use a red light therapy device, and stop and seek advice if anything feels wrong. This is especially important if any of the following apply to you.
Who should be cautious (contraindications)
- Pregnancy. Safety during pregnancy hasn't been well studied. Don't use a device on or near the abdomen while pregnant unless your doctor says it's fine.
- Photosensitivity. Some medications (for example certain antibiotics, acne treatments and other photosensitizing drugs) and some conditions (such as lupus or porphyria) make skin react to light. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Eye safety. Never look directly into the lights. Bright red and near-infrared LEDs can harm your eyes. Wear the eye protection the maker supplies, especially with panels and face-height devices. If you have an eye condition, ask an eye doctor first.
- Skin cancer or suspicious spots. Don't shine a device over moles, lesions or areas with a history of skin cancer without medical advice.
- Implants and devices. If you have a pacemaker or another implanted device, check with your doctor.
- Thyroid. Avoid using devices over the front of the neck unless your doctor agrees.
- Children. These devices are designed for adults. Don't let children use them.
- Heat and burns. Devices can get warm. Don't fall asleep wearing one, don't use it on broken or numb skin, and follow the maker's time limits.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions
Use each device exactly as its maker describes: session length, distance, how often, and any warnings. If the instructions and our guides differ, follow the instructions and your doctor's advice.
